The idea behind the new Bensport La Sarthe (named after the famous Le Mans circuit), is to recreate the great days of special coach built cars. Even as late as the 1950s it was possible for the wealthy motorist to buy a running chassis, most likely from Rolls-Royce or Bentley, and then to have a body of their choice fitted to it by one of the prominent coachbuilders of the day.
The La Sarthe has an elegant, beautifully made, two door aluminium body fitted to the chassis of a Bentley R-Type saloon from the mid 1950s. The design of the car has more than a nod to what a possible lighweight Bentley coupé, entered for the 24 Hours of Le Mans of that period, may have looked like. The chassis, of matchless enginering quality and durability, is totally rebuilt, as is the original engine, driving the car through a manual gearbox rebuilt to final factory specification.
The essence of the La Sarthe is ageless style and panache, interwoven carefully with practical modern details. The emphasis on the luxurious, handcrafted interior, as with the rest of the car, is bespoke, as can be seen from the interior images below. Instead of polished wood veneer around the dashboard and door tops, this car has been kitted out in trim colour coded with the exterior.
Just 24 examples will be built, which is another nod to Le Mans.
